Modernizing API Test Suites with Cypress

The Challenge

Maintaining reliable API test suites is essential for catching regressions in our backend services. Within the AUTOMATION2026CHALLENGE project, we identified that our existing test suite needed an update to better reflect current integration standards. The goal was to ensure that our REST API validation logic remains robust and easy to maintain as the service evolves.

The Approach

We focused on refactoring our testing layer to improve readability and reliability. By leveraging Cypress, we can perform end-to-end API testing that mimics real-world client interactions, ensuring both status codes and response bodies meet our expectations.

Standardizing Request Patterns

Instead of scattering network logic across multiple files, we centralized our API interactions to provide a consistent interface for our test suite:

// cypress/support/api-client.js
export const getBooking = (id) => {
  return cy.request({
    method: 'GET',
    url: `/booking/${id}`,
  });
};

export const createBooking = (data) => {
  return cy.request({
    method: 'POST',
    url: '/booking',
    body: data,
  });
};

This abstraction allows us to update the base request configuration in one location if the underlying API requirements change.

Implementing Robust Validations

With the client standardized, we updated our test specifications to perform strict validation on the JSON response schemas:

describe('Booking API Integration', () => {
  it('should retrieve booking details correctly', () => {
    getBooking(1).then((response) => {
      expect(response.status).to.eq(200);
      expect(response.body).to.have.property('firstname');
      expect(response.body).to.have.property('totalprice');
    });
  });
});

This approach ensures that we are not just testing for a 200 OK status, but also verifying the structural integrity of the returned data.

Key Takeaway

Decoupling your request logic from your test scenarios is the best way to maintain a clean and scalable API test suite. Start by creating a dedicated client module to handle your cy.request calls, and you will find it much easier to adapt to future API changes.
